European Union
The Conservative Party looks at the European Union and sees a good idea gone bad. What was supposed to boost our trade and economy has trapped us in an over-regulating, bureaucratic and undemocratic mess, which the TaxPayers’ Alliance estimate costs the British economy £120 billion a year - far outweighing the benefits of the Free Market.
Successive Governments have handed over more and more power to Brussels; the tens of thousands of EU regulations and taxes that affect our daily lives are too numerous to think about. We cannot even negotiate trade deals with other countries - the EU must do it for us.
Contrary to wide belief, the UK could and would survive outside the EU. Our trade with Europe is mutually beneficially and it would be against their interests to lock us out of their markets. Our trade with other parts of the world is also growing, and without the EU we could negotiate our own trade agreements with them. Britain would no longer have to follow the thousands of EU regulations that cost our economy so much.
We will withdraw from the European Union, regaining our freedom and sovereignty. This is completely possible - We are only bound to EU law because British law says we must be. Repeal those laws, and EU law no longer applies to us.
We will repeal the European Communities Act 1972 and it’s amending acts, leaving EU law and treaties unenforceable in the UK.
There are thousands of UK laws based on EU directives. As they cannot all be repealed all at once, a Committee will be created to review these laws over a period of several years, with a series of Acts being passed once a year to amend them under guidance from the Committee.
We will negotiate a Free Trade agreement with the European Union (similar to Norway and Switzerland's) as was intended when the UK originally joined.
We will regain control over our Economic Exclusion Zone (which will extend 200 miles from our coastline) fishing zone, which contains around 65% of Europe's fish. Without the EU regulations causing almost 70% of some catches to be thrown back dead, our fishing industries will be given a valuable boost.
